Smith was released right before his $15.6 million upcoming season contract was guaranteed on July 15th, 2019. Since Smith's 2015 trade from the New York Knicks to the Cavs, there have been many failed attempts to part ways with the shooting guard.

Rumors have been circling that the NBA star would be joining former Cavs leader LeBron James with the Los Angeles Lakers, but there are no confirmed talks on the table.
