Colorado cannabis regulators are on the heels of approving a vape additives ban in light of the current vaping crisis sweeping the nation.
In the past year, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported over 1,000 cases of a vape related lung disease that they have never seen before. This lung disease has even been linked to at least eighteen deaths nationwide, primarily in teens.
In the past year, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported over 1,000 cases of a vape related lung disease that they have never seen before. This lung disease has even been linked to at least eighteen deaths nationwide, primarily in teens.
With nine of these vape related illnesses striking the area, Colorado cannabis regulators jumped into action to prohibit several cannabis concentrates and products consumed by inhalation containing a few specific additives.
Here is a list of the proposed ingredients to be banned in Colorado:
Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT Oil)
Polyethylene glycol (PEG)
Vitamin E Acetate
In the cannabis vaping sector, many times, cutting agents are used to thin THC oil. In its natural form, THC Oil is too thick to atomize or vaporize. Using reducing agents is the only viable option that we have seen to make cannabis concentrates and products feasible for inhalation and vaporization.
An additional change to the mandate would require all concentrates and products containing additives meant for inhaling must have the additives listed on the product packaging. Included in the product packaging, a warning bearing "Not approved by the FDA" must be added as well.
If regulators pass the ban, it will go into effect on January 1st, 2020.
Colorado's Marijuana Enforcement Division communications specialist states:
"I think this is a very dynamic and innovative industry. It's moving very quickly," said Shannon Gray, the marijuana communications specialist for the Marijuana Enforcement Division. "We as regulators are always trying to stay ahead of the innovation and put rules in place that protect public health and safety but don't diminish what this innovative and overwhelmingly responsible industry is trying to do."
If the rules are passed, any companies found in violation of the laws would be subject to a hefty fine, suspension of license, and or a rescind of their license.
