Naomi Osaka Dominates the US Open 2020

This past Saturday, 22-year-old Naomi Osaka clinched her second US Open title against Victoria Azarenka. This second US Open title will sit nicely alongside her three Grand Slam titles, all achieved within a short three years.

Playing to an almost empty Arthur Ashe Stadium due to coronavirus pandemic restrictions, Naomi came back to win over Azarenka 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory now ranking her No 3 in standings. This victory marks Osaka's

Osaka's boyfriend, rapper Cordae, was seen by television cameras pumping his fists and pounding his chest after a hard battle between the two tennis superstars.

Not only did Naomi Osaka come to win, but the 22-year-old went to the courts wearing a face covering with the name Tamir Rice. Tamir Rice was a Black 12-year-old boy killed by police officers in Ohio back in 2014. Throughout the tournament, Osaka also wore several other face mask coverings with the names of other Black victims of violence at the hands of police.

When asked about her choice in the masks honoring those individuals, Namoi responded, "The point is to make people start talking."

Just last month after the shooting of Black man Jacob Blake in Wisconsin, Osaka withdrew from the semifinal at the Western & Southern Open. The young tennis superstar returned to the courts after the tournament went black for a full day in solidarity of those who have lost their lives surrounding racial injustice.
