Nike Announces "Mamba Week" In Honor of Kobe Bryant

Nike has recently announced, "Mamba Week," to begin later this month to honor the late Los Angeles Lakers Shooting Guard Kobe Bryant starting August 23, 2020, celebrating his memory on what would have been his 42nd, birthday.

In a Nike press release, the brand states that "Mamba Week," will focus on "three key efforts," the first being a $1 million donation to the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation, to honor Kobe and his daughter Gianna. She also lost her life in the tragic helicopter accident on January 26, along with seven other souls.

The sneaker giant will release a series of Bryant's products that would include some of his iconic shoes and jerseys highlighting the span of his 20 NBA career since the passing of the NBA Champion during "Mamba Week."

Nike will continue to release Kobe Protro shoes, allowing the millions of fans he inspired around the world to keep Bryant’s legacy going. Nike will also continue to work with the NBA to release limited quantities of Bryant’s iconic Los Angeles Lakers jersey. Products will begin releasing in late August, coinciding with “Mamba Week.” - Nike

In addition to those things, Nike has pledged to continue helping grow Kobe's Mamba League partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs in Los Angeles, CA, giving kids a safe space to learn the game of basketball and be inspired by it. The Mamba League partnership also drives to maintain an equal balance of boys and girls in the program lead by engaging female coaches and mentors.

Throughout his career, and even after his retirement in 2016, Mamba Mentality became an indicator for something extraordinary in the world of sports. Athletes who channeled Kobe’s instinct or flair for the clutch were branded with the moniker. Kobe himself instilled it in the young women he coached in his retirement, including his daughter Gianna, who naturally embodied the next generation of Kobe’s relentless competitiveness. - Nike

Furthermore, Orange County supervisors voted to declare August 24, Mamba Day. This date falls a day after the late basketball stars' actual birthday to honor both the numbers 8 and 24, which Kobe wore during the first and second half of his successful NBA career.
