Nike has aimed to kick off the year forcefully with one of its first significant drops of 2021, the SB Dunk Low 'Street Hawker.'
It has already drawn a lot of attention from sneaker-heads because of its unique and stylish pattern. Designed by the Guangzhou artist Jason Deng, it depicts the incredibly delicious Chinese street food cuisine.
Jason has incorporated about 22 different street food vendor dishes into the styling of the SB Dunk Low. This fusion references the bonding effect between the two diverse regions in China, mismatched by the contrasting panels in both of the sneakers, represent the Chinese culture fashionably.
The amazingly vivid watercolor graphics portray the significance of the six regional dishes in Chinese cities. Those cities and dishes include Beijing's Bean curd milk & Fried Circle, Chengdu's Hot Pot, Xi’An's Pita bread soaked in lamb soup, Shanghai's Plain noodles, Guangzhou's Roasted goose, and Taipei's Shaved ice with taro balls.
Besides the Chinese culinary dishes aesthetic of the SB Dunk low "Street Hawker," Chinese characters are also portrayed, and an embroidered copper on each heel of the sneaker. These references are yet another characteristic nod to the various aspects of the East Asian culinary culture. The shoe of the pair contrasts each other in varying colors to make the design and representation pop.
The pair's left shoe has a lighter, almost beige like color to represent the three flour-based dishes in Chinese street food. Donut patterns also appear on the forefront pair alongside green bean soup. The depiction of chopsticks is displayed in a wood grain-like texture akin to the Swoosh. Compared to the left shoe, the right one possesses more fiery colors that represent heat levels of spicy and sweet food.
The ostrich feather on the lateral side in the right shoe takes inspiration from the famous crispy roasted goose in Guangzhou, where Deng hails from in China. It also boasts a collar lining, which represents meaty colors. Outside of the Street Hawker's visual creativity, the sneakers shoe box continues under the vivid Nike SB's Striped Box Era.
